# Four Homages to Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America Found in Piston Peak

A piece of the past lives on! Four tributes to Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America have been discovered inside the new Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom.

The area once home to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America is about to undergo one of the biggest transformations in Magic Kingdom history. In its place, Disney is creating Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-themed land inspired by the American wilderness.

However, the past has not been completely forgotten. The scale model of Piston Peak displayed at this year's D23 reveals at least four notable tributes to the attractions that previously occupied the area.

A Tribute to Fort Langhorn

One of the clearest references can be found behind the upcoming Miss Fritter’s Demolition Derby attraction. A nearby building features several design elements reminiscent of Fort Langhorn, which once stood on Tom Sawyer Island.

The original fort included a guard post, blacksmith shop and other frontier-style structures. Elements of that design appear to have been incorporated into the new Piston Peak environment, giving the former attraction a subtle connection to its replacement.

The Legacy of the Mike Fink Keel Boats

The former Mike Fink Keel Boats are also represented in the new land. The attraction once operated on the Rivers of America, with guests riding free-floating keel boats named after the legendary riverboat captain Mike Fink.

A building shown on the Piston Peak model features several architectural similarities to the former Mike Fink structure, including wooden beams, a distinctive roofline and a cupola.

The building will not become a new Mike Fink attraction, however. Current information indicates that the structure will instead serve as a restroom facility.

Harper’s Mill Returns in a New Form

Another recognizable reference is Harper’s Mill, which once stood on Tom Sawyer Island. The water-powered gristmill paid tribute to Disney's 1937 animated short The Old Mill.

A similar structure can now be seen within Piston Peak. The original water wheel has been reimagined to fit the Cars setting, with the new version resembling a large brake rotor.

The structure also features Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater beneath its covered area. This could potentially become a character meeting location, although Disney has not yet officially confirmed its final use.

The Iconic Barrel Bridge

Perhaps the most exciting tribute for longtime fans is the return of the Tom Sawyer Island Barrel Bridge.

The original bridge consisted of wooden planks connected to large barrels and created a distinctive bouncing sensation as guests crossed it. Imagineering plans to recreate this feature within Piston Peak, keeping the new version as close to the original as possible.

According to the information shared at D23, Imagineering may even reuse portions of the original bridge if they are legally permitted to do so.

Keeping a Piece of the Past

These four discoveries suggest that Piston Peak will not completely erase the history of the former Rivers of America area. Imagineering has indicated that many smaller tributes will also be hidden throughout the new land.

Piston Peak itself will have a very different atmosphere, drawing inspiration from the Rocky Mountains, American national parks and the history of the American frontier. Guests will encounter mountains, rivers, waterfalls and geysers, all integrated into the world of Cars.

For longtime Magic Kingdom fans, these details could become some of the most meaningful parts of the new land. While Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America are gone, Disney appears to be carrying small pieces of their legacy into the future of Frontierland.
